November 2010

What a tough month. 54.52 total miles for the month. Got PF, some weird knee clicking and sick. Has been the most mentally challenging month. Part of the lessons of running are that sometimes external factors can sideline you as well. Just as in life. Cherish the healthy moments.

ARC Hollywood sign run

Look how small downtown LA looks in the background. Great run!

Scott Jurek question

With all your miles of training and during these intense 100 mile (20 + hour) races, have you ever had what you might consider a spiritual experience?

Definitely, there is something really magical that happens. In fact, its these little glimpses of what I call epic experiences that keep me going. I think this is a common experience for athletes of all kinds it just differs in how they describe it. For me it's when all the craziness around me, the pressure to win, the physical pain and psychological suffering build to an almost unbearable intensity, that I'm forced to dig deep within. It's at these junctures that something opens up and allows me this indescribable experience, and suddenly I feel not just unstoppable, but unlimited. Running these races has becomes a vehicle for reaching these states within myself that I haven't learned to access in any other way. I've come to see these races as a spiritual journey condensed into a period of roughly 24 hours. The demons of your own mind come out to torment you forcing you to come face to face with the deepest sense of self. In order to overcome the many obstacles over the course of 100 miles I'm forced to find the part of me that won't succumb to the suffering, but instead will rise above and be victorious. To do this I really have to dig deep.

Who stole my Chi?

The struggles of learning and continuing Chi Running...

Right when I think I have it down and can run forever, my knee starts to hurt a bit. The pain comes and goes as I adjust my form. At the end, I think I will have to rest for a day or so, but when I wake up, the pain is gone, and I'm fine. It has been a roller coaster for sure. Icing and stretching seem to help a ton. Each day bring a new challenge, a new high, and a new low. The process is the journey and I want to remember it when I finally get the form down.

And it's back....Had a great 6.44 mile run through the hills. No pain and sliced right through the hills.

Came and went today. 6.02 mile run, mostly flat, Chi came and went. Slowing the pace and correcting my form made knee pain go away. Lesson learned.

Chi comes and Chi goes...

I live to run

Recently, I have discovered that I have enough. I have always wanted more and more, and now realize that I have everything that I need....

Sometime during my life, I fell into the consumerism trap. I felt that I needed things for all sorts of scenarios. Scenarios that never happened. Before I knew it, I was buried in my stuff. Now, I have to fight back against the consumerism instinct that I acquired.
